How to Maximise Standardised Test Results

This is a summary of a conversation I had with my sister about preparing students for standardised tests.

10 to 1: My Top Ten Maths Lessons with an IWB

From this web page, you can download the flipchart for this workshop plus all supporting resources. The flipchart and most of the accompanying resources are in the zip file. The Celebrity Ages files were too large for the zip file, so are available as separate files.

You can also download the flipchart for the workshop "Ten Terrific Tips for Teaching with (Digital) Technology".

Whole Number Flipcharts & Other Resources

Author: Rex Boggs, Glenmore High School

This web page contains some flipcharts and other resources for teaching Whole Number in Year 8.

Caveats:

* Many of the pages are just the foundation upon which the topic is developed during the lesson, so they can look very sparse.

* At times a flipchart will contain pages from previous flipcharts. I keep these pages so I can refer back to them easily. Or I may not get to those pages in the previous lesson, and hence need them for the current lesson.

* The maximum file size is 4MB so some pages from some flipcharts have had to be deleted (usually jpg scans of documents).

* These are not the best possible flipcharts on these topics; they are the best I had time to produce (usually the night before). So there is much room for improvement.

Factors and Multiples

Four activities to support the teaching and learning of Factors and Multiples.

The Factor Game
This is the classic factor game.

Highest Common Factor Game
A great game for practising highest common factors.

Factors and Multiples Puzzle (from NRich)
A fantastic whole number activity from the NRich website. Factors, multiples, square numbers, triangular numbers, etc.

Juniper Green
A great game for consolidating factors and multiples.

Generating Functions

This is not an interactive resource; rather is an article by Dan Teague from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics about 'generating functions', which is an amazing tool for solving some tricky questions about permutations and combinations.

New Language Puzzle

Apologies - this is not a digital resource, but it is such a wonderful puzzle that I just had to include it.

I lived in Eugene Oregon in the summer of 1980. A local newspaper had a wonderful weekly puzzle column, so each week I would buy the newspaper and go to a coffee shop and attempt to solve that week's puzzle. The link below is my favourite puzzle from that era.

I have no idea who the author is, so if you have any knowledge about this puzzle can you please click on [Contact Us] and share what you know. The file is available as a Word doc or as an Acrobat pdf file.

Three thumbs up!

Circle Geometry - A Beginner's Guide to Geogebra

This Word document is a beginner's guide to Geogebra. Geogebra is a free dynamic geometry program available in both Windows and Mac format from
http://www.geogebra.org/cms/

This document gives a brief introduction to Geogebra in the context of circle geometry.
Thanks to David Crewe for sharing.

Riemann Sums 2

Students will approximate the area under a curve using Riemann sums. This will be done by utilizing a program that computes the Riemann sum as well as drawing the graphical representation. The activity concludes with students discovering that if enough Riemann sums are used, then the area under a curve can be calculated with the required degree of precision.

How To Read and Comprehend Maths Word Problems

One key ingredient - maybe THE key ingredient - for students to be able to solve maths word problems is being able to VISUALISE what they read. The attached document gives you a step by step approach to teaching students how to visualise word problems as a key step to solving the problem. Thanks to Jude Ocean from RMIT in Melbourne Victoria for providing the core material for this document.
